Subject : Audiogram - A Thought To Ponder posted by kip on Fri Apr 30, 2010 8:47 am |
| When I first went into a local hearing aid business, after the sales pitch, an audiogram was taken of my hearing loss. In my long history of unsuccessful fits of HAs/fitters (before AH), I began to wonder about the audiogram being taken - for it seemed to be the first place, started, to be fitted with aided hearing of some sort. And, later on, a poster on this message board talked about how important a REM (real ear measurment) was. Two things, now, come to mind. Yes, a required audiogram is the first place, started. And, locally, I never had a REM done, ever. Then, this is where I began to "ponder". When I was successfully fitted by AH, I was given the equipment to "test the waters" of my hearing ability (myself), with AH's CICs in my ears, sitting at my computer, in my home. On site tests of all kinds of sounds and speech were everywhere in my own home - REM, if you will. Then the "icing on the cake", AH's Audis were just a toll-free phone call away for support. I began to wonder if unsuccessful users of their HAs have ever thought of what kind of mood, health conditions, etc they were into when they had an audiogram - a place to start -- taken as a first step in their HA journey. My opinion: I bet, on any given day, an audiogram given by different fitters will render different results -partly because of the fitter's ability/equipment and partly because of the attitude, mental, and health state of the HOH person. Self adjustments, self-programming, self fine-tuning, and professional support provided to me by AH - gives me the self-control I was looking for, that was/is not available, locally. Nice! kip |
